Tourism Barrie's Adventure Team takes on Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)

by Adventure Team | Aug 27, 2014

This summer, with Tourism Barrie’s Adventure Team, I had the great opportunity of trying Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (otherwise known as SUP) on Kempenfelt Bay, Lake Simcoe with Happypaddling.com.

P1040281 SUP is one of the fastest growing     watersports which is why so many visitors to  Barrie this summer (and us!) wanted to get  out on the water! SUP’ing is a great summer  activity because it’s not only a fun adventure  but also a great work out as it challenges  almost every muscle in your body.

Happypaddling.com instructors Mike and Ann taught us about all of the safety rules and procedures before we got out on the water. We learned that we must have a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD) on at all times and also must have a whistle in case of emergency. All SUP’s come with a leash that attaches to your ankle so just in case you fall off, your board doesn't float or get carried away by the wind!

P1040286Safe and informed, it was time to head out on the water. Our instructors taught us that we should start on our stomachs to get the feel of the board. We began by paddling around with our hands. Eventually, we practiced finding our balance on our knees and began using the paddle. Once we were comfortable, we stood up. I learned quickly that to be stable, you must keep your feet shoulder-width apart and in the centre of the board. When you aren’t used to standing on water, it’s easier than you think to wobble and fall off!

SUP’ing is an amazing sport because it allows people of all different abilities and in all different locations to take part. It’s easy to learn and once you get the hang of it, it’s a leisurely and relaxing activity.

P1040290In my opinion, the coolest part about SUP’ing  is that you can do so much more than just  paddle. You can explore areas that were  never available to you before. You can race or  you can even use it as an alternative to a  boat and go fishing! One of the most unique  and athletic things you can do on a SUP is  yoga!

If you’re new to the sport, I definitely recommend taking a SUP’ing lesson with Happypaddling.com or another one of Tourism Barrie’s watercraft rental partners.

What do you think? Are you going to give SUP’ing a try or have you already? We want to hear about your experience! Leave your stories or questions in the comment section below
