Our second decade of live theatre begins with the musical based on the 17th century Spanish masterpiece, Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes, around about the same time as Shakespeare penned King Lear and Macbeth. Also known as “The Impossible Dream musical”, Man of La Mancha lit up the New York stage for the first time in 1965 winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and lasting for an incredible 2,328 performances. It tells the story of the “mad” knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by the playwright Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. Man of La Mancha is performed without intermission and contains mature themes and dramatic scenes of violence. Recommended for ages 13 and up.
