Experience the Magic of Film in Barrie: The 28th Annual Barrie Film Festival

Every October, Barrie lights up in a different way. The air turns crisp, the waterfront glows gold with fall colour, and a wave of creativity sweeps through the city. For nine days, film lovers from near and far gather at Galaxy Cinemas Barrie for one of the region’s most anticipated cultural events — the Barrie Film Festival.

Now celebrating its 28th year, the festival continues to bring the world to Barrie’s big screen, with a dynamic lineup of Canadian and international films, engaging Q&As, and lively receptions where audiences and artists connect. Whether you’re an avid moviegoer or simply love great storytelling, this year’s festival offers the perfect reason to cozy up and enjoy fall in Barrie.

Where Stories Come Alive

The festival opens with the Canadian premiere of Tina — a moving story about a Samoan teacher who finds healing and hope through music and community. It’s a soulful beginning to nine days of storytelling that celebrate resilience, creativity, and connection.

Youngblood

Later that evening, the spotlight turns local with Youngblood — a contemporary retelling of the 1986 hockey classic, filmed partly at Barrie’s own Sadlon Arena. The screening includes a Q&A with the cast, followed by an Opening Night Reception at Milestones Grill + Bar, where audiences can toast to another year of great cinema in Barrie.

The lineup continues with films that inspire and entertain in equal measure.

  • Silver Screamers follows a group of seniors diving into the world of horror filmmaking — a joyful, heartwarming reminder that creativity has no age limit.
  • Little Lorraine transports viewers to Nova Scotia for a gripping, true-crime drama that lingers long after the credits.
  • Nika & Madison delivers an emotional, urgent story of friendship, justice, and survival.

Each screening offers something new — and often, the chance to hear directly from the filmmakers who bring these stories to life. Click here to see the full schedule.

A Celebration of Short Films and Local Talent

On Saturday, October 25, the spotlight turns to the next generation of storytellers with the Short Film Showcase & Awards. This audience favourite features a mix of regional, national, and international shorts, including several from right here in Simcoe County.
