There’s a moment every Barrie summer where the waterfront shifts. The usual rhythm of walkers, cyclists, and sunset watchers starts to blend with something bigger. Music drifting over the bay, the smell of fresh-cut fries and barbecue in the air, and rows of tents stretching along Kempenfelt Bay like a small city that appears overnight. That’s Kempenfest.
From July 31 to August 3, 2026, Barrie celebrates the 54th edition of one of Ontario’s most iconic waterfront festivals, and it’s not just an event. It’s the kind of summer weekend people plan months in advance, the kind that turns a day trip into a full-on getaway.
If you’ve ever been, you already know. If you haven’t, this is the year to fix that.

A Waterfront Transformed
For four days, over two kilometres of Barrie’s shoreline becomes a living festival. One direction leads to live music echoing from the OLG Main Stage. The other leads you into rows of handmade goods, antiques, food vendors, and families weaving through the crowds with ice cream in hand.
It feels less like attending an event and more like stepping into a summer postcard that somehow came to life.

Where Creativity Takes Over: Arts, Crafts and Antiques
Right beside it, the Antique Village, hosted by the Optimist Club of Barrie, feels like stepping into another era. With more than 35 dealers from across Ontario, it’s a treasure hunt of vintage furniture, collectibles, and nostalgic finds you didn’t know you needed until you saw them.

The Midway, the Music, and the Magic of Being a Kid Again
It’s equal parts nostalgia and adrenaline. Bumper cars, carnival games, and the unmistakable soundtrack of summer fairs. Families will also find the Kids Village, a dedicated space designed for hands-on activities, face painting, and live entertainment that keeps younger festival-goers just as busy as the rest of the crowd.

More Than a Festival: Bash by the Bay, Food Streets and Hidden Gems
Down by Centennial Beach, Bash by the Bay wrestling brings live action right to the shoreline, adding something unexpected to the festival mix.
Then there is The Oasis, a relaxed waterfront patio where people drift in and out with drinks, live music, and one of the best views in the city. It is the kind of spot where you plan to stay for 20 minutes and end up watching the sun go down.

Make It a Getaway
If you are planning to come, don’t just plan your day. Plan your stay.
Book your accommodations early, bring your friends or family, and give yourself time to explore beyond the festival grounds. Walk downtown. Catch a sunset by the bay. Stay for one more set than you intended.
So mark the dates, gather your people, and don’t overthink it. Make it a getaway. Stay for the weekend. Experience it all.
