Chasing Fall: Get Outside and Take in the Colours of Barrie & Area

There’s something about fall that makes you want to slow down. The air gets a little crisper, the leaves begin to turn, and familiar trails suddenly feel brand new. In Barrie and the surrounding region, autumn is an invitation to get outside, breathe in the fresh air and take in the incredible colours that arrive for just a few short weeks.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk through the woods, a stroll beside the water or a longer adventure through the countryside, there’s a trail waiting to be explored.

So grab your favourite sweater, lace up your shoes and follow the colours.

Find Fall in the Heart of Barrie

Tucked into the heart of Barrie, Sunnidale Park is an easy place to escape into nature without leaving the city. With nearly 49 acres to explore, the park combines wooded areas, open green space and winding trails that become especially beautiful when the leaves begin to change.

In the fall, the trees become the main attraction. Follow the paths beneath the changing canopy and take your time. Look closely, and you’ll notice that no two trees seem to change at exactly the same pace. Some are still holding on to their summer green, while others have already turned brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red.

For an extra dose of discovery, explore the park’s interactive guided tree walk, which offers a closer look at the different tree species, ecosystems and wildlife found throughout the park.

And if you’re exploring with little ones, make some time for the Every Kid a Hero Inclusive Adventure Playground before heading home.

This is the kind of fall outing that doesn’t need much planning. Just show up, breathe in the cool air and wander.

Sunnidale Park is proof that you don't have to travel far to find a little escape.

Take in the Colours Along the Waterfront

Fall looks a little different when the water is part of the view. The Barrie Waterfront Trail wraps around Kempenfelt Bay and into downtown Barrie, offering a beautiful combination of open water, colourful trees, parks and city views. The level, accessible trail is perfect for a leisurely walk, a morning run, a bike ride, or simply taking your time beside the lake.

Start around Heritage Park and wander along the waterfront toward Centennial Beach, taking in the gardens, green spaces and views across Kempenfelt Bay. As the leaves begin to change, the contrast between the colourful shoreline and blue water creates one of those classic Barrie fall views.

And don't be surprised if your quick walk turns into a much longer outing. There are plenty of places to stop, sit and simply take it all in.

Cross the scenic bridge, take a moment to admire the John L. Jose Centre and follow the trail toward Baby Bear Pond, where a boardwalk carries you through the landscape.

In autumn, the changing leaves add another layer to the experience. Listen for birds overhead, watch for wildlife and take in the different colours and textures of the forest floor beneath your feet.

Discover a Different Side of Fall at Friday Harbour

For a walk that combines fall scenery with wetlands and wildlife, make your way to the Nature Preserve at Friday Harbour.

This peaceful natural area is full of life, from turtle nesting grounds and amphibian habitat to native trees and wetlands. As you walk, take a moment to notice the landscape around you - there’s much more happening here than meets the eye.

Keep an eye out for the protected butternut trees, the amphibian pond and the area's unique snake hibernaculum, an underground shelter that provides a safe place for local snakes to overwinter.

The trails are an easy way to spend some time outside, but the real joy is taking it slowly and seeing what you discover along the way.
